Your dr. Wolf chess coach app stinks

No a3 does not give you an advantage. This happens constantly. You’re reprimanded for making a move that gives up material even though you get a crushing initiative.

Also the newspaper board is disgusting and the subscription model a pathetic cash grab aimed at milking lower rated players. Even shredder a decent engines only required you to purchase it once.

Another fail from chess.com

Isn't it recommending Bc4?

Your own diagram seems to show 9..Nf6 even though the text says 9..f6.  You want to recommend 9..f6?

In any case, it's only available on the ios app, so I haven't tried it. Most of the feedback posted on the news item has been positive.

It seems to have a very high 4.8 rating on the Apple store. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/learn-chess-with-dr-wolf/id1353041020

It played Nf6. I played a3 and it took back my move and says a3 is wrong now he has the advantage and Bc4 is correct. This is wrong. I’ve wrote a 1 star review. Most of the positive reviews sound like a bot wrote them.

a3 loses the d4 pawn.

I love the look of the newspaper board! Is that an option on  this site?

Do you know how to play chess. I’m probably the second best expert on the c3 Sicilian after Sveshnikov.

You give up the pawn to get a crushing attack. It is not a mistake to play a3. Teaching beginners to be so tight about giving up a pawn is disgraceful. Why don’t you load the position yourself into an engine?

I understand you need to shill for the site but come on. [Deleted by Moderator: AbuseReport]

OK, I did. According to Stockfish, a3 is a good move but not best, at least out to 28 ply, and then it starts being in the top two.. According to Komodo, it is also good, but not best. Both engines like Nxd7 at depth.

So, my initial thought was incorrect, but the Dr. wolf app isn't suggesting a terrible move either, being in the top 4 moves and still with a winning evaluation for white.

edit: Komodo MCTS like Bc4. That might be the engine being used; a3 is also liked, with around a .25 pawn difference. Though I don't know why it would say that a3 gives an advantage to black.

Also, don't know at what level that is at, but the other benefits of Bc4 are good teaching ideas for a begining player. The tool isn't meant to make Masters.

Nxd7 is completely winning.

Stockfish 11 from my android.( 42 seconds analysis). Depth 32/64. ( Stockfish has access to 5 men tablebase and it already hit tablebase 100 times).

A 4.8 rating from 1600 people?

I'll bet that ranks pretty high.

For OP, if you are interested in learning in this opening, please stop at 6.....Bd7?? It is critical blunder for black and black is very likely lost.

Correct move is 6..... e6.  You can stop learning anything beyond losing move after 6.... Bd7.??

On a purely superficial level I agree that the newspaper background "devalues" the perceived program appeal/status/look etc. Surely the developers could have come up with a more modern approach? This is a very 1800s salon chess magazine look. Not really fitting for the 21st century.
