My 2 cents on how to improve 4 player chess, in order to allow the best player to win more often, or to remove what I would call the '' lucky fool '' factor as much as possible...
There are a few situations that arise that are completely unfair to one of the player
Situation: Three players are left. One player is is crushing the 2 others, but is over 20 points down. Both losing players resign. The winner only gets 20 points and loses the match.
Solution : If a player resigns while there is a 'free 20 point king' on the board somewhere, the winning player should get 40 points. ie, points for the 2 kings that are dead on the board.
Also, there needs to be a draw option, I've been in some endgames Q vs Rook+2 pawn for instance, where all could do was perpetually give checks. Or there needs to be a 50 move rule like in normal chess
You could consider removing the resign option altogether. More often than not, players that resign ruin the outcome of a game one way or another. Besides, you never know whats going to happen in 4 player chess. I've won games from positions that semmed utterly hopeless. It's very rarely reasonable to resign. And if it IS, it means you will be mated soon anyway.
So that's it, thanks to all the developpers of 4 player chess! I hope my feedback helps
I like the solution. I do believe that if there are three players left and two resign, the remaining player should get the points for both dead kings. I do like having the resign button as an option, however.
I have a four player variation called Fierce Chess which I think addresses the issues of the current 4 player game and adds a few twists to the standard play. I would like to discuss the possibility of introducing it here. Who do I talk to? My email is jrigdon@researchonline.net
