Creating a 'cleaner' place to play chess

But then it isn't like it is free either, these things have been paid for by taxes...

A FIDE rating is, like a UCSF rating, something that is paid for by membership fees and a tournement sponsed by these agencies likewise...  A tournement here is free and a rating here is free the two are not the same...  A rating here is rarely reflective of an OTB rating...

So what?! My taxes has already paid me a free membership to all of the content in the internets as well.

I can go to any city and use the park benches.

If you're homeless, any city has a homeless shelter where you pay 5 € / night and can shower as much as you want, get a bed and get something to eat for dinner and breakfast. In some cities it is, even, free. Been there, done that.

I disagree with having to pay to play chess "over the internet".

we actually already have this. we have several "pools" of players. we pair jerks with jerks, laggers with laggers, unknowns with unknowns, suspects with suspects, and premium/titled/trusted with premium/titled/trusted. basically, you are probably already playing someone very much like your self most often. not always, but most often. if you notice something different, then let me know :)

That's nice! Only knew about the jerks/laggers pairings.

Benzodiazepine

Most of the times I find I'm the jerk one.

Maybe you just don't have enough jerks.

kleelof

Oh. So I'm being paired with other sexy love Gods sitting around in their boxers and drinking cheap beer?

Awesome!

Benzodiazepine

Most probably. I'm drinking cheap beer too, but I don't even wear boxers.

Thoughtdancerschoice

***"So what?! "****

Benzodiazepine... So it isn't free...

Then something ain't kosher, I have never cheated in my life and have had nothing but autoplayers since I got here...

So essentially what this person is saying, unless you pay extra, you are not apt to play any body but bots or previously banned players as everyone starts as unknown, and I have maybe played one or two real players there, and since one one was a real jerk this must mean, I am paired with jerks... So even if I paid, I would be paired with jerks, BTW, I had a paid account long ago, the pairings ain't any different...

As if I have to pay for google search and the countless other things I use google for. Suckers who use Microsoft crap can pay for what everyone else gets for free.

If you use google, you are effectively bartering your marketing data against services. Unless you insist that "barter" is free, that's not free.

Of course, the point could be made with LibreOffice vs. Office, Scilab/Octave vs. Matlab, etc.

I'm just a CRP (california random player) and a ranking under 2000.  I only lose when cheating is involved, too.

Me too!

There are plenty of hardware and software costs.  Plus your access fee.  Unless you do all your surfing at the public library, you will have multiple expenses.

Are you really so dense that you can't understand this issue "scientifically," a term you so heartily abuse and misunderstand ?

Indeed, you can use this site "for free" and endlessly post mindless dribble.  Clearly, these are areas at which you excel.

Thoughtdancerschoice

The bottom line as to costs is tourneys are free here because you are playing for 'brownie points'...  USCF or FIDE tourney are not free, because they maintain the integerity of the tournement pool and there are usually prize monies involved...

His marginal cost of (using this site, google, etc.) is zero though. He would have bought the computer and the connection anyways.

When I moved in here (2 years ago), I used Reaver to get the WPS/WPA passwords of my neighbours routers - for free WiFi.

Before that, back in 2007/2008, I simply used Aircrack-ng/Airodump-ng/Aireplay-ng to crack neighbours WEP passwords.

Unfortunately they get weary when they see the WLAN light on 24/7 and their connection slow down when I'm downloading stuff. They tend to replace their router after I abuse it for so long. Also, they plug out their routers completely when they go on vacation, which sucks. Frown

Benzodiazepine

Unfortunately, for Reaver, newer APs are rate limiting PIN attempts.

Unfortunately, for Aircrack, no-one uses WEP, anymore.

I'm not aware of any other practical attack on WPA/WPA2, either.

Of course, "free" as in "open-source software under GPL license" is a different kind of "free" as "whatever I can take from merchants and fit in the hold of my ship".

Benzodiazepine

Well, Windows can't enforce you setting a password for your wireless router. Tongue Out

Wireless Routers typically run Linux. Sure you can disable security on them. But they all, at least nowadays, come with a preset password. Don't think manufacturers are allowed to ship wireless routers with open WiFi.
