Kindle Chess

With the Kindle SDK released, some are hoping for a nice chess app for Kindle. Chess.com seemes to have a good selection of mobile choices - I think Kindle should be considered. With its free 3G, it's certain to be a hit. Surely it wouldn't take much to create, would it? I own a Kindle and hope to see a Chess.com app for it at some point!

Why would you want a chess app for a kindle? I sure didn't buy my kindle so that I could play Chess on this site. I bought it to read e-books. And that free 3G isn't going to stay free if everyone starts using it to play Chess and God knows what else.

I would be nice to have some Chess diagrams and more chess books on the kindle, but I don't see the point in playing Chess on it.

Thanks for the negative and unhelpful comment. And I bought my phone for talking, why would I need a chess app? But since you're obviously the type that likes to complain, I understand. The point is, it would be easy to program, since Kindle has limited capabilities anyways (only online chess and maybe articles/blogs). And since it would be easy, and people would use it (obviously not you), the real question is, why not? If you have a good objective reason for "why not," I'd sincerely like to hear it.

I don't understand. I wasn't attacking at all. If anything, you were. I just wanted to know if you had an objective reason for not wanting a Kindle app. It wouldn't hurt you or anyone else to have access to it. Your personal, non-objective opinion, was not helpful to my inquiry.

And as I pointed out it would hurt me. The free 3G for the Kindle is only there because it's use is limited, and the majority of that use provides sales for Amazon. If non-sales generating apps start using Kindle's 3G, it is not unreasonable to assume that Amazon will stop providing it for free, negatively impacting Kindle use for people who just use it to read.

If such an app was made - I'd be buying a kindle for sure.

I wonder how the webkit browser in the new kindle 3 will handle the chess.com website.

I'm waiting for the new Kindle and am anxiously awaiting a Chess.com app. Playing chess in between reading is what I love to do. Chess.com would fit on a Kindle like a key in a lock.

I have the (NEW) Kindle and the browser isn't usable for making moves at Chess.com - While you can select a piece to move, not all of the squares are recognized as 'active' spots for selection by the browser's movable cursor.  Because it's not a touch-screen, the cursor moves are larger than the squares on the board, and the need to accurately select where to move, it's very unusable for making moves in games.

I, too, would LOVE to see a Kindle app for chess.com.  I'd even be willing to pay an extra cost for the app, even though I'm a full chess.com member.

I have a kindle which I use largely for reading fiction. I think it is superb for that purpose and easy to handle and use.

I also have downloaded pdf chess problem positions which it displays to perfection.

As for playing chess, well why not if that is what you want.

The facilities on this site for playing are just about as good as one can get so I will read on my kindle and play chess on this site.

If you go on the Gutenburg site all the kindle downloads, and incidentally all others, are free.

I would certainly use a chess.com app for the kindle for online chess. I already use the Android app - but for some reason the small screen on my phone does seem to make the experience not very.... chess like.

Kindle would be perfect with a chess.com app.  Read a book for a while, make a move.... Perfect.
