There is a vacation function. Unless you are in a "No Vacation" game, you can put your games on vacation and you don't need any permissions.
It's in the settings.

I'm going to visit my family over Christmas and they live miles away from any Internet access. That's okay for some of my games, but for those games that are taking place over one or two days per move they are probably going to time out. It would be great to have a "request pause function" ie ask your opponent if it's okay to pause the game for a number of days.
