Taunting, Baiting, Insults.

I recently had this experience with a player, first time I ever knew of him and this is what I get. I should add first that then he sent me a trophy of a TACO, which saw as a racial slur, and then left a comment on my profile, "Take his queen and he will quit" so since it was in three different ways I consider myself to have been harrassed:

*Edited out player's name as per suggestion

I would like those expressions that he used to be filtered out. I didn't know I was being badgered until I saw the word "chicken" and then I lost it. That is my number one suggestion. My second suggestion is that you should block the IP address of people who are capable of this level of harrassment & dogged insulting.

By the way, a day later and I am still shaken by this, I'm not sure I want to continue playing on this site. I'm sharing to help with the feelings I have. I have submitted three reports for the three distict things he did, and I am waiting the 24 hours to see that something was done. If nothing is done then there isn't closure and I can't continue here. Any supportive words would be appreciated. Thank you.

They will probably come down on you for posting this under the no "naming and shaming" guidelines. Remove his name from the posts and you'll be better off. There are jerkoffs all over the internet. Just don't play the guy again and move on. You can bet he's not staying up nights worrying about it. If you don't let these things go and walk away they win....

Idiots can be found almost everywhere, even in a serious game like chess. He was trying to distract you to win with a cheap way making you lose on time, or he is just stupid. Howewer I agree with you that he should be banned.

vinsvis

Exactly, there are frustrated douches like this one everywhere. Try not to care. Your 'turd' was fine, should have closed the window and played the next game immediately after that.

What throws me is that it's CHESS, a rational person's game, you know? And I'm kind to people, I help them learn the game, I chat with people from around the world when they want, and this is the last place I was expecting to be abused. If it was a person on the street I would walk away and let it go, but he's still here and possibly doing this to others. I really wish there was something that could be done.

One idea that I had earlier was to hide people's ratings because there only two reasons people come here (a) the prestige of the points, (b) learning by playing. And IMHO hiding ratings would get rid of some of the former who are abusers.

So anyway, I am slowly bouncing back, I just played this game: http://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=671772962

Ever seen chess hustlers? Rational human beings? No.

vinsvis

Well, it's probably going to happen more often. And I know how annoying it is when the smacktalker is a better chessplayer than you. Life is unfair like that haha. But try to realise that it's either a little kid, or an older dude, which means he must be very frustrated and unhappy in real life.

Was it because you let your clock run down?

I was having a good game, I would have won, but I was tired and blundered.

Oh, BTW, it was a 30 min game and I wasn't taking that long.

Probably the wrong word, I originally typed intellectuals, but went looking for synonyms and chose the wrong one. Reasonable & Sensible (rensible) maybe. I think you know what I mean, I think Vinsvis probably does anyway.

Just turn off chatting next time someone insults you. I like to keep the chat-option open as long as I can , because like you, I like to talk to people all over the world. Let's face it , people can be arseholes whether they are chessplayers or not. Don't let them spoil the fun . I hope you stay on CC , we need people like you.

Thanks for that. Embarassed

Wilbert_78

I agree with pelly13. I had hundreds of nice conversations with people here while playing chess and maybe 10 times that someone was trying to insult me. There is only 1 way to get to these kind of people. Ignore them. They want attention, either positive or negative, just as long as they get you to respond. So don't give them what they want.  After the game you just block them and you won't be seeing them again.

And if they are really really insulting, report them. Staff will take care of the rest.

Hope you can let it go. It's not worth getting upset about some random idiot on the internet.

NomadicKnight

To the OP: Dude, there is an option in each game you play on here: "DISABLE CHAT". If someone is being rude, taunting you, or otherwise making an ass of themselves, take the high road and just mute them. After muting them, beat them and relish in the satisfaction of the moment. Just because a small percentage of players on here act like the guy you speak of is no reason to leave this site. Just like in every other aspect of life "there is always going to be one thorn on the rose".

Wizard_Esk

Like others have said, there are people like this all over the Internet, don't let them get at you. And again, as others have said, they will most likely be young fools or old guys who are sad and have nothing better to do. Just need to not care about it and enjoy a different game. Though it's things like this, as well as bad losers and cheats which is why I always play the computer on live. You know it's straight chess! :)

This kind of behaviour gets much rarer past 1400-1500 or so, and completely disappears at around 1750, from my experience. You will still get people letting the clock run out of time one move before mate, though.

Until then, you might be better off just turning the chat off. Shame for the legit users, but well...

valymer

I personally recommend turning off chat permanently. If you want to chat, go to IRC or Yahoo or something. If you want to play chess, then play chess. You don't need to talk to do it.

I didn't notice Anand and Carlsen chatting it up during their championship match games.

That's a big relief to know because I've been playing for easy pennies. I should have a much higher rating for the number of games I've played I just wasn't worried about a rating.  It totally makes sense now that someone mentioned it, and I will take your advice and play stronger players. Cool

Ha, ha, you're funny. The other day my wife came home with groceries and needed my help to unload the car, so I messaged my opponent this info and said I would be back in 5 minutes. I came back after 5 minutes (Time: 24/19), no abuse, no fuss. And bonus, I still won the game. Wink
