Is this new tournament system here to stay or is this just some experimental thing?

I hope you bring back regular tournaments VERY soon.

  • #2

I think they are here to stay. The question is if they will increase the number of regular tourneys or not.

  • #3

I find this decision mind-boggling. To replace regular tourneys when a starting time is known, a maximum number of players known at the start, and the regular swiss system used for play with a system where a tourney goes on for 30 to 60 minutes and it's all about mating as fast as possible and playing as many games as possible, with all kinds of players joining mid-way through the tourney while dozens and dozens can drop out doesn't make any sense to me. Not to mention that all players simply play together, whether their ranking is 1,000 or 2,000. It's utterly ridiculous, actually.

There are currently ZERO regular tournaments that I can find. If this is the new system, I certainly won't be renewing my membership.

  • #4

are this tournament available now if yes how I play them please tell me !

  • #5

You go to Live an join them just like the normal tourneys.

@RW63, they are still running regular events, but I don't know what the schedule looks like.

  • #6

Right now there are ZERO regular tournaments available.

  • #7

According to the newest Dev update, they should be adding more regular Swiss events back into the mix.

For what it's worth, there are 5 events on the upcoming list right now and were some last night a bit before you posted.

PLEASE come back tournaments Swiss system every hour. These sand tournaments are a mess. si quieren seguir con los torneos arena todo bien, que queden como oferta para quienes les gusta eso (los menos seguramente) pero vuelvan a incluir los torneos suizos a 7 rondas que iniciaban cada una hora en todos los tiempos (10, 5, 3 y 1 minuto).

  • #9

if they want to continue with the tournaments sand everything, that they remain as an offer for those who like that (least of all) but reintroduce the Swiss tournaments to 7 rounds that started every hour at all times (10, 5, 3 and 1 minute).

Right now, there are 9 arena tourneys available, and only 4 swiss. And none of the swiss ones are 1 min, 2 min or 3 min.

Keep it up, chess.com, and I will not be renewing.

There are 1|0 and 3|0 Swiss tourneys now/again.

It says 1-minute swiss tourneys are supposed to be at 0:55 of every hour. There was none at the most recent x:55. There is one for the next one.

  • #13

I think these arena tournaments are a very bad idea.  I hope they go away.

  • #14

Exactly. They just promote playing as many games as possible as fast as possible. It's the complete opposite of what chess is all about.

Plus, there seem to be some new rule in place, for instance '10 players minimum for a tourney'. There were 8 of us signed up for the 1200-1499 1-minute blitz tourney and that got cancelled, and everyone was automatically transferred into the open 1-minute blitz tourney with other 16 players for a total of 24 players (with 9 rounds only, as that continues to be the maximum - which, if arenas have 20+ games, makes this old rule really ridiculous now), so you had lots of 1,200+ players playing 1,800+ and 2,000+ players in a joint tourney.

This way, the 2,000+ player won the tourney, with 9 wins out of 9 games, and all he/she had to show for it was probably 9 extra points to his/her ranking, as the gap between him/her and the rest was so huge, while many others had to play a lot of similarly mismatched games (800+ vs. 1,500+ and so on). The second strongest player by far (1,650+) was, of course, second. Wasted time for everyone in this tourney.

It's always 'interesting' to observe all kinds of websites 'experiment' with the products they offer to people (paying customers). It's quite amazing how many of these websites don't understand the importance of treating your existing customers well. Don't you get it? You have 4,000,000+ users (or whatever the actual current number is) for a reason. We come here because we like the website the way it is. Not because we want some inexplicable changes that no one asked for.

Like I've said before - feel free to keep arena tourneys, it's your website to do with as you please. But if you don't return to the previous schedule of swiss tourneys, I bet you you will lose 35% of paying users within 12  months.

For the number of rounds, the idea of the regular tourneys is you go in knowing approximately how long it should take. So, it doesn't make sense to increase the number of rounds in those, regardless of the number of players.

I don't know what there actual cutoff is to decide to cancel a tourney or section. I know that the number of rounds will never be more than half of the players, so if there were only 8, max rounds would have been a 4 (which makes sense for a swiss tourney). My guess is if they don't have enough player to complete at least half of the planned rounds, rounded up in this case to 5, the they cancel or merge.

In the past, tourneys with 8 players would go ahead and be played.

I agree to cap swiss tourneys at 9 rounds, what I can't agree is that one has no control over which tourney he/she will be in. If you sign up for  tourney and see there are let's say 10 players in it, with a minute to go, you are ready to play the 4-5 rounds. But then, if that gets cancelled and you are automatically thrown into a tourney with 30 players and 9 rounds, you will have no chance to withdraw from the tourney until you have lost or forfeited the first game, which is unfair. Not to mention that many from limited (1200-1499) tourneys don't want to play open tourneys where you always get a few 1650+ players who then beat the crap out of everyone and make the tourney much less interesting.

It's being worked out so that there will be more  Swiss tourneys coming according to staff.. Can't wait for them to get it done.. Arena is lame and I don't have 59 mins to wait around for a desirable Swiss tourney.

Is there a post in the forums about that? I haven't ran across anything but it would be useful to have a reference.

I know they added some Swiss events back into the rotation recently, as posted on the live tourney help article but that is the only notification I've seen about it.

Here is part of an email exchange I had when inquiring about it.

"To answer your first question. Yes, some Swiss tournaments are already reinstated and we are working very hard on the schedule to find the perfect balance of Arena and Swisstournaments.

Again, thank you for your patience while we find the perfect balance of these two tournaments in various time controls. If you would like to have a certain time control added please let me know so I can pass it along to my boss and the developers!"
