US Championship

A different class of Grandmaster                May 5th

The third round of the U.S. Chess Championship was played today. This event is part of the yearlong trend of great chess being played worldwide. The headline game of the day was Gata Kamsky vs. Larry Christiansen. Both players are Grandmasters and many time Unites States Champions. However, Kamsky is also a former World Championship finalist and rated over 2700. How does this stature compare with merely being a great player such as Larry? Examine this position, after Black’s 43rd move

Kamsky – Christiansen

2013 US Champ.    Round 3

With this particular material imbalance I would feel lucky to draw with White against Mr. Christiansen. That is one skill differential, the other is what decides the game. Gata, with White here, just grinds Larry down in another 30 moves with impressive technique. Access to see the complete game.
