WA Open

It is 2 months away from the WA Open as of this writing. For the WA Open, would you opt 3-day, or 2-day if you had the choice? Why?

Joseph_Truelson

I would probably do 2 day because it is shorter and I might play in the WA Scholastic (to meet up with buddies).

I don't know anything about chess tournaments in that area of the country, but I always prefer having all my games in the same (long) time control. So given the choice, I always take 3-day

Taulmaril

I'd do the longer schedule if for no other reason than if you mess up the early round you can re-enter and try again (assuming you can re-enter at this event).

I favor 3-day because I'm not comfortable with G/60, especially mixed in with 40/2.  It's hard to switch speeds.  And I get really tired if I have to play more than 2 games in a day.

I'm really looking forward to it.  For some reason big tournaments are more exciting than small ones.  And I did pretty well last year, though this year I have to play in the Open so it will be harder....

I couldn't tell you because I've not yet played in a tournament. I've never new to one as a matter of fact. If it is going to be in the Seattle area, will it be open to the public? Anyway, best of luck to you from Seahawk City!

The WA Open will be in Lynnwood, which is about 20 miles north of Seattle and reachable by bus.  It's open to the public.  Here's the ad:

I'll note that it costs more than twice as much as the average weekend tournament, so if you just want to get your feet wet, you  might prefer one of those.  A full listing of WA/OR/ID tournaments is at:

Spectators are also welcome if you just want to come see what it's like!

Normally I'd fancy those women's prizes, but I think Chouchanik, Naomi, Sangeeta, and Badumkhand are all likely to be there, which is pretty stiff competition.

@mkkuhner: Thank you very much for the information! I am just glad to see that there are other chess players in the Seattle area here at chess.com.

I live in South King County so Lynnwood is not too far away at all.

You should check out the Seattle Chess Club near Northgate Mall (Wednesday/Friday and some weekend events).  Another good place to play is Crossroads Shopping Center in Bellevue, late afternoons and early evenings most days.  I believe there is also a Tacoma Chess Club which  might be closer to you.

Me too. I would prefer 3-day for big tournaments.

Plus, I'm signed up as well.

That is right! You can re-enter. This is the exact reason I am signed up for 3-day.

I did the same thing at a tournament in texas. I favor the shorter games so the 2 day would've suited me best for the early rounds but I decided I'd play the 4 because 1 way or another I'd need to play a few long games either way so I needed the experience plus I could re enter if I did poorly and play to my strength. I ended up not having to re-enter but it's always good to have the option.

Didn't Nick Raptis somehow re-enter TWICE in last year's WA Open and end up playing 8 or 9 games instead of 6?  Never figured out how that worked.  Then again, this is the guy who managed to win an open tournament while playing a match with Roland Feng AT THE SAME TIME (though he did lose the match....)

I will always cherish my one draw with Nick.  Probably will never get another one.  But it was memorable.

He played 8 games because he must have had 2 games first day, then a Reentry, and then played the tournament again and 6 more games.

At the extravaganza he reentered after loosing to Travis Olson in the first round, so he played 8 games in the extravaganza! It was impressive.

And at. The Kings vs princes he played in a tornado at the same time.

Reentry is kind of expensive

Taulmaril

At the tournaments I've been to its like 60 dollars. A good value considering if you've traveled to play you're pr I baby several hundred dollars in the hole already and would be playing having to basically win out to maybe see your money back. In those big events it's hard to catch up from a game behind unless you go on a crazy roll.
