What type of tourney do you prefer?

Hi all,

I'm just conducting a survey to see which type of tourneys most players prefer and if you'd be so kind I'd like you to post your answers to the following five questions:-

1) Standard chess or thematic

2)Tourney format

3)Open or in specific ratings categories

4)Number of players

5)Vacation or No Vacation

I look forward to your answers and "thank you" in advance.

Hi Mike, here's my viewpoint, it might not be the same as everyone else but it just my outlook on it.

1.Standard Chess.

2.To start game off with an opening and not an automatic start.

3. Specific rating, like 1200-1400, then 1400-1500 and work up the scale that way.

4. Maximum number of players in any tournament, 8 people.

5. This should be an option as some games go for a long period and when holiday comes around for some, they have to forfeit the tournament.

I must make clear this is only my opinion it might suit some but I think in some areas it is relevant. Thanks to you also Mike for your concern.

I play 1day/move tourneys with a small field. As a freeloader, I can only play one tourney at a time. I also always play standard, since the thematic ones are beyond me. As in, I don't know many openings.

I also make a point to play in tourneys that are no vacation. I made that mistake once about three years ago and I will never play in any tourney that allows vacation.

Regarding format, most are straighforward. However, there are times when tiebreakers may change it.

Standard, open, number of players 100, no vacation tournament

1. standard

2. round robin 7-10 per group 3 advance 2 games at once per opponent use tie breaks

3. specific rating (maybe 1000-1400)

4. 30-100 players

5. I don't care.

The only thing I would like to see for a tourney is minimum games played.  Too many tourneys start with a specific rating range and when you get to the next round some of the players are 200-300 points higher than when the tourney started.  Obviously, they should not have been in that rat range to start with.  And it is annoying to the rest of us.

Mdavidson, if you start your own, you can make it a prerequisite.

The type where I win.

jk I don't win tournaments.

1) standard (what's thematic?) 30 minute games

2) double round robin. regular start.

3) Open

4)10

5) No vacation.

How do I make my own tournaments??

AlCzervik

wally, I think mdavidson's issue is with the newbies who have played only a few games and join a tournament with a rating range of, say, 1200-1500. The newbie may be in that range, but only due to having played so few games here.

If anyone plays enough games here, their level evens out, even with losing and winning streaks.

  1. Standard
  2. No vacation
  3. Smallish number of players, must finish fairly quickly, I can play only 10 at a time

I guess my ideal is 12 players, all play all ( single group) 22 simultaneous games, 1 day per move.

I like all tournaments so the only thing I would like to see is no vacation. If I have duplicated my answer please forgive me, I lose sight of where things are and do not know what do a lot of the time.

I'd like to see an unrated tourney. That would be great for people who have never experienced one before.

najdorf96

I second that emotion! An Unrated tourney, no vacays, 3 days, Standard. Cool.

najdorf96

True. I meant an tourney which is unrated, heh, not just for 'unrateds'. Hmm. Maybe you could have Ratings ranges ie 1800-2000, 1500-1700 etc but the games themselves aren't rated? (If that's what's difficult to set up then...ack. must be an way to do something like that)
