Recently it was the 30th anniversary of the passing of Jean Arthur. She was one of the few to transition from being a star of silent films to talkies with her distinctive voice and flair for comedy. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for The More The Merrier 1943 but her best remembered roles were Mr Deeds Goes to Town and The Plainsman in 1936, then Mr Deeds Goes to Washington 1939, A Foreign Affair 1948 and of course Shane in 1953. Born in Plattsburgh, New York, she also lived in Saranac Lake, New York, in Jacksonville, Florida, in Schnectady, New York and Westbrook/Portland in Maine. During and after WW1 she worked in Bond Street, Lower Manhattan. Retiring from acting, from the 1960s to 1973 she taught drama at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York where Meryl Streep attended and in her junior year, Arthur described that it was as if she were watching a movie star already. She also taught at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. Her family regarded the Washington Heights area of Manhattan as home, but all of her later years were lived in Carmel, California and in accord with her wishes her ashes were scattered off Point Lobos.
