Thank you, Peter... The Knight is from a chess set I ordered through the British Chess Magazine Shop back in 1974. It is made of rosewood - I love the eyes. Actually, 2 years ago I tried to order a spare set, but could not find anything, anywhere, like this. They don't make them like they used to, anymore... Cry

The origin of many witticisms is hard to trace, misquotations abound. On several occasions, well-known phrases have been attributed to persons other than those who originally uttered them. Having gone through the complicated route of a few quotations, I feel that more often than not circumstance is to blame for misattributions ‐ not plagiarism.

An illustrative example is the witticism “Anything too stupid to be said is sung”. This is commonly, and falsely it would seem, attributed to Voltaire. The phrase originally appears in the libretto of Pierre de Beaumarchais (Aujourd'hui ce qui ne vaut pas la peine d'être dit, on le chante, Le Barbier de Séville, 1775, act I, scene II). George Bernard Shaw, in one of his plays, points at the authentic source (Tanner: Let me remind you that Voltaire said that what was too silly to be said could be sung – Straker: It wasn't Voltaire, it was Bow Mar Shay – Tanner: I stand corrected, Beaumarchais of course. Man and Superman, act II). Still, the history of that era casts doubt on whether it is a misattribution after all. After Voltaires death in 1778, to avoid censorship in France Beaumarchais took a large part of Voltaire’s manuscripts to Germany, with the intention of publishing his collected works. Due to the huge cost, this venture was never completed. It is quite plausible that Beaumarchais, inspired and influenced by Voltaire for sure, but hardly plagiarizing, took up this witticism from the unpublished manuscripts, to which he had first-hand and sole access.
