Silman Fans & Fanatics

  • International
  • Formed: Jan 10, 2012
  • This group is for players who are inspired by the writings of Jeremy Silman and who strive to incorporate his ideas into their games, particularly his chess strategies based on recognizing the imbalances present in any position. We have study groups and open threads to which we contribute whenever anything of interest comes along: "Silman Chess Mentor Courses, Silman Articles on, Book Reviews, etc.".____ Silman: "I'm often asked why I got into professional chess. I always answer in the same way: "For the money and the women!" Why would I say that? Because, there is no money and there are no women. In other words, it's another metaphor for, "I play because the game is everything to me. I know there's no fortune to be had, or cheerleaders screaming in bliss as I push my Rooks down the board. I play because I have to play ... I play because it's in my blood and has become a part of me ... I play because chess makes me happy."

  • @Milliern, ok, sounds good. Yes, I don't think I could handle one more chess commitment right now.

  • Chessmo, if we can get a regular schedule going on that, whenever it gets rolling, I'm in. It's good to put it off. So many chess projects are on the horizon or lined up already!

  • I would be happy to lead a study group when I start that, but again, it won't be for at least 6 mos. In the meantime, feel free to also sign up for this group, which is what I used in the past to coordinate HTRYC study groups:

  • I just finished my first pass through HTRYC last month. Great book and experience. I only did about 1/4 of the tests at the end of each chapter. Toward the middle of this year, I plan to start going through the book a second time in great detail, completing all the exercises and also using supplementary sources (books, videos) to truly try to master each topic. I've had my most success with chess books by doing multiple readings, each time trying to go a bit deeper.
