Long ago we missed the 80th birthday of Terry Gilliam, whose career achievements have been iconic. Born near Medicine Lake, Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the age of 12 his family moved to Panorama City, Los Angeles where he was a straight As student at Birmingham High School, but also became a fan of MAD magazine. Gained a BA in political science at Occidental College but feared he would become a terrorist and moved to England, where he met Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Michael Palin, so beginning the core of Monty Python. He was a writer on Do not Adjust Your Set 1968 and Monty Python’s Flying Circus 1969-74, designing the graphics (awarded a BAFTA 1970) and has acted in many films including Jupiter Ascending 2015, but was writer/director of Time Bandits 1981 The Adventures of Baron Munchausen 1988 The Man who Killed Don Quixote 2018 and also directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1975 Jabberwocky 1977 The Fisher King 1991 (Golden Globe nomination) 12 Monkeys 1995 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 1998 The Brothers Grimm + Tideland 2005 The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus 2009 and The Zero Theorem 2013. He won a BAFTA in 1988 with the rest of the Python team for their Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema & he was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship in 2009. He has been Oscar-nominated for Best Original screenplay Brazil 1985, which he also directed and BAFTA-nominated 1984 for Best Short – The Crimson Permanent Assurance. He now has homes in Highgate, North London and near Montone, Perugia on the Umbria-Tuscany border in Italy.
