(updated 23Aug2017) I learned to play chess at age 11.  My older cousin figured that teaching his younger cousins to play chess during the summer was a great way to avoid constant babysitting supervision... 

My cousins and I would guard our places in line to play on the ONE hollow plastic chess set we all shared awaiting our turn to win the daily chance to challenge our chess master older cousin... We resorted to visiting to library for chess books to give us hope for defeating our mentor.
