It's hard to believe the season flew by so fast, but Saturday, March 20 at 10am MST is the Idaho State Scholastic Chess Tournament (most of us simply call it "State").  The competition will be especially fierce this time around.  Idaho scholastics just keeps getting stronger and stronger! This year, State will be held on Chess.com in the same manner as the qualifiers were. There will be three sections based on age: K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.  There will be a maximum of five rounds in every section (n...

The final qualifier of the season -- The West Regional -- took place on Saturday, February 27. We had 35 players compete. Four more players qualified today to bring the total to 78 players. This number is down a bit from recent years, but considering the situation in the world, I’m really pleased. I think having this many players qualified to play in our state championship after all the struggles of getting used to online chess is simply amazing! Thank you players and thank you parents for ma...

We had almost 40 players that braved the cold temperatures and the huge snowdrifts to compete in the ICA South Central Regional Scholastic Chess tournament!  Well, not actually.  The tournament was online, hosted on Chess.com.   The K-5 Section was the largest with 18 players.   The results were noteworthy in that both Nosarev boys got on the podium.   Vladis Nosarev took a clean first with a 4.5 score.  Emma Gao edged out Liam Nosarev on tiebreaks for second.  It’s always cool to see girls o...

Q1: Can I play in any of or all of the regionals?A1: Yes! Play in as many as you can. Get some practice in before State. Q2: What are the times for rounds 2, 3 and 4?A2: Please pay attention! Beyond round 1, there’s no set schedule. Chess.com starts the next round as soon as the last board is over. Players must watch the boards to decide if they have time for a personal break. Do not risk missing a round! Q3: I can’t decide what I want to do on Saturday yet. Can I register at the last minut...
