Hi, my name is John "Johnny Chess" Crissman and I live in Chicago.  I am the King of Chess at the Chess Pavilion just south of North Avenue Beach in Chicago. I am a US chess expert/ Candidate Master (2000+ elo), a former U.S. Marine, and have been a chess coach in over 30 schools in the Chicago land area since 2010.  I help students from absolute beginner to advanced (Class A USCF class players ~ 1800) reach their goals.  I even work with stronger players as a training coach/sparring partner.

I am happy to work with you if you are willing to also put in some work.  There will be no hand-holding nor sugar-coating.  There will only be hardcore training like the Rocky movies, but instead of boxing, it will be chess!

I will not be teaching you openings by reading from an opening book.  We will focus on the meat of the game and the things that will give you the most bang/improvement for your buck.  I will give you homework, btw!  :0

Currently, with the COVID-19 situation, all of my coachings have been remote.  I also tutor mathematics for all grade levels K-12 and college-level math.  I have an M.S. in Computer Science.

I am a former student of the legendary Simon Williams (Ginger GM) and I have adopted some of his openings (French, Dutch, London) and style to regularly crush titled players (NM, FM, IM, GM, WFM, WIM, WGM)
