Sunil Weeramantry (Nakamura's stepfather and first coach) was the chess teacher at my elementary school when I was a kid, and I got into the game a little bit then but not all the way. I picked it up again for a while in high school, and then started playing more regularly on chess.com sometime around my late twenties. That's around when I learned to have fun with it by not taking it too seriously. It's a great exercise in concentration and planning, and I'm happier when I leave it at that.
