Alexander Grischuk Wins World Blitz

2012 world rapid and blitz.jpgAlexander Grischuk won the World Blitz Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, with a score of 20/30 points, half a point ahead of Magnus Carlsen in second place.

Grischuk had led after the first day with 10½/15 and maintained his lead until the end despite a late charge from Magnus Carlsen who couldn't quite recover from a relatively mediocre first day score of 8½/15.  World Rapid Champion Sergey Karjakin chased Grischuk for a long time but ended up in third place.

The time control was 3 minutes plus a 2 second increment.  The final standings:

    @F22Raptor, it transposed into a Ruy Lopez so Carlsen was probably familiar with the theory.

    Despite 2 bad days Carlsen still managed 2nd place in both events.. Congrats to him.

    He is 1st in Classical (idc about Anand), 2nd in both blitz and rapid.. can't get any better than that.

    No surprise really, as Grischuk gets a lot of practice - he tends to end up blitzing even in his classical time control games! Laughing

    Carlsen is the overall winner! 2nd place in rapid and blitz can't be beaten.

    Interesting openings and games in 3 minutes. Fun to see. Good on Grischuk, Carlsen, and Karjakin for a good showing.

    the highest rated player down to 2nd place?carlsen you are really good, what happened here?even gelfand..hmmm, try to be the World Champion, it's just ok to be a runner-up in this blitz match!keep it up!

    A4?  really Carlsen?  that is NOT how you get to the world championship!  Im just kidding I know its just blitz and he did beat a world class player with it.
