The widely acclaimed documentary film Bobby Fischer Against The World by director Liz Garbus is being shown on the UK television channel BBC4 tomorrow (Wednesday 30 November) at 9pm.
BBC4 is a free-to-air digital channel, so may be available outside the UK, and on the internet.
The broadcast is part of BBC4's Storyville strand, and has been re-titled as "Bobby Fischer: Genius And Madman". It will be repeated again on Thursday and Friday.
Further details are available at the BBC4 website.
The film is also being screened on the rest day (7 December) at the upcoming London Chess Classic (previewed here soon!)
The only mad people were the filmmakers......
Fischer was mentaly very healthy. He was though angry specialy against very low and stupid people...
Nice to hear that... I will watch, I hope I would be better than the movie of Shearching Bobby Ficher...
It's a great film, so why not buy the download from iTunes or get the DVD and from all the usual stockists? The perfect present as we enter the holiday season!
For everyone who missed film or didn´t find link there is full movie at movie25.com.
In case anyone missed it, it'll be up on iPlayer pretty soon for at least a week or so, and there must be ways of getting round the UK restriction there too.
It worked for 72 minutes up to the Morphy reference.
Thank you MrMartin. It worked!
Saw this documentary on HBO on Demand. Very interesting for all those who love chess, obviously. But, to those who say that he went crazy, or paranoid, I don't believe that's the case. He was indeed paranoid, but only because of all the conspiracy theories he began to read about. Trust me there is some grusome and frightening stuff in those theories. Especially the ones about government. Anyone who starts to believe in those things begins to question everything. And certainly wants to get the word out. Its there way of trying to wake people up. And because the theories are so overwhelmingly plausible, it can make someone feel that the outside world is shrinking on them. With no room for freedom. Which would make anyone be concerned about it. But I think he misunderstood some of it and became an anti-semite over it. I'm sure people have heard the saying, "Jews run the world." That might be true, who knows, but its not the religion, it's the person. Its more rational to hate specific persons than to hate a whole religion. And I find it funny that people think its the way he thought in chess that made him turn that way. Trust me, anyone who starts to get involved in those conspiracy theories can easily become an extremist. The convincing literature in those theories are enough to convert anyone. Specifically because it threatens ones livelihood.
For everyone trying to stream this from outside the UK, try using hotspot shield (free program, google it) to block your IP address.
Just type watch bbc four free online in google open link and enjoy.
Buy the DVD to go along with your chess books - no shame in buying the DVD if you are outside UK
please, any way to see it outside UK?? currently not possible BBC straming outside UK :.(
@ sheardp Apologies, the broadcast time is 9pm (not 7pm). Now corrected!
The program will be available on the BBC iPlayer for a week after broadcast. Strictly speaking this is for UK viewers only, but I believe there are ways around that for anyone determined enough (a quick google search helps! ).
dschaef2, Bobby Fisher is strongly opinionated... Absolutely nothing wrong with that at the very least! We have Neo Nazis in this very day, but do we call them out for being mentally sick? No. We just see them as being opinonated, and in this case obviously have poor judgement.
And besides, if what Fisher said was true about being tortured in the Pasadena jailhouse then we can see that he is clearly distraught with his native country from early on.
Playing during the month of Dec on HBO.
Thanks for the info, I'll make sure to catch it!
And there must be ways around it, but I'm pretty sure the BBC only allows viewers from the UK.
No really, he was totally mentally healthy!
Will have to watch this documentary, looks interesting.
