Ivanchuk Leads Kings At Halfway

Vassily Ivanchuk still leads the Kings Tournament in Bucharest by half a point after both round three games ended in draws.

Ivanchuk could make no headway against Fabiano Caruana with the white pieces, while Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu used his first game with the white pieces to help keep Veselin Topalov at bay.

So Ivanchuk's opening round win against Nisipeanu is enough to lead into Saturday's rest day.

The standings after 3 rounds

Isn't it preferable in this version of the RL to play 9...h6 before moving the rook to e8 so that 10.Ng5 is prevented?

The reason for the draw is that Ivanchuk is leading the tournament and had the white pieces in the position (so he was slightly, slightly better). From his point of view, there isn't much of a chance to win and the cost of losing would be much greater. For Curuana, there aren't any practical chances unless Invanchuk tries something crazy. A draw is reasonable when considering the tournament standings.

2700s see a lot more than 1400s. They don't have to play till the board is left only with two kings to prove to the spectators that it's a draw.

Did Ivanchuk and Caruana both get tired at the same time? Was it nap time? I don't see how it can be claimed that zero tactical options remain for either side. Pieces galore, boys!

    Wasn't Topalov WORLD CHAMPION once?

The Topalov-game was great! Topalov's style has always appealed to me..
