Jan Werle Wins EU Open Championships

The 2008 EU Individual Chess Championship in Liverpool has ended with Jan Werle of the Netherlands (pictured) winning with a score of 8/10.

Werle finished ahead of British players Mickey Adams and Nigel Short, and the French players Etienne Bacrot and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave among many others to take the title.  It's the 24 year-old law student's best chess result and earned him the princely sum of £6,000.

Werle's girlfriend Iozefina Paulet rated 2275 Elo also played (see picture below), but the joint winners of the women's event were Jovanka Houska, Yelena Dembo and Keti Arakhamia-Grant.
