More than five hundrad animals a day are subjected to almost unbearable pain in U.K. Laboratories.It has been revealed.The shameful figure emerged after medical research scientists were legally obliged for the first time to collect and report data on suffering.The home office statistics show that one in twenty of the nearly four million anual animal experiments carried out by universities,drug companies and charities last year caused severe suffering.Most of the One hundred and eighty five thousand Animals were mice or rats but the figure includes small numbers of cats,dogs,rabbits and monkeys.Scientists said the decition to perform such experiments is not taken lightly and that animal reseach is vital if we are to ease human suffering from disease.The latest developements in allowing paralised people to walk,restoring sight,slowing the progress of alzheimers disease and the first successful treatments for ebola were researched using animals before trials on humans.Lab animals that fall into this category include some that have been genetically modified to suffer serious illness,as well as creatures given cancer or burns causing pain that cannot be completly relieved.The rating also applies ti animals that are poisoned in safety tests of new drugs before trials on people.
