php8WdpRX.jpegMagnus Carlsen isn't just a phenomenon on the chess board, but increasingly so off it as well.

The UK edition of the women's magazine Cosmopolitan has published a list of the "Sexiest Men of 2013" and amongst the actors, singers and assorted other celebrities is the world's #1 ranked chess player!

Carlsen has done some modelling before for the Dutch designer clothing company G-Star Raw, and his profile in the general (non-chess) media continues to grow.

The magazine describes Carlsen as a "hottie", using the first studio shot below from Carlsen's official website as an illustration.

Is Carlsen's high media profile unambiguously good for chess, or is it a distraction? Also, is he really a hottie? Have your say in the comments! Smile

Sorry, but this guy Carlsen seems a rather secretive person. There is only a couple of his interviews on the Internet, with one of them given by him when he was a schoolboy. But there is a lot of questions which need to be answered. First of all, how does he manage to play so well? It is incredible.

I am no admirer of the male form, but I doubt that Carlsen is a particularly admirable specimen. Fischer had a similar thing going for him, when he won the WC in 72. He was inundated with proposals of marriage from complete strangers.

It is an odd phenomenon, because as any chess player will tell you, most women do not find us attractive. They go for the aggressive jock type, and they despise nerds. They are wired to seek out good providers, but their biology has not caught up with changes in society.

BTW I am sure that Carlsen dating Hou Yifan is an urban myth. Is there any evidence for this?

They have sports guys on that list, and chess is like a sport, so it works. He might not be the very first person to turn heads if he weren't brilliant as hell, but that has got to count for something, and anyway, he's good-looking enough. The way his brow crinkles honestly makes him look like my pet hedgehog, or makes her look like him. I keep thinking about this.

Can't see how it wouldn't be good for chess. Go Magnus, the face of chess!
