The Abuja Rockstars were the first team to join the PRO Chess League from the continent of Africa. They were eventually joined by two other African teams: The Lagos Leatherbacks and the Johannesburg Koeksisters. Of these, the Rockstars look to be the most solidly constructed, with all players rated between 2150 and 2350.

The PRO Chess League is proud to be hosting teams from all over the world and thrilled to have two Nigerian teams competing in the first season of the league.

The Rockstars are managed by FM John Oyeyemi Fawole. Here is what he had to say:

"I'm excited to be the manager of the Abuja Rockstars. This is a great opportunity for us and will give our players the experience they need playing with stronger players around the world. My team's goal is to put players in shape for International events and preparation for upcoming chess tournaments."

Fawole knows how to style his Chess.com profile page

Here are some of the top players for the Rockstars:

FM Kigigha Bomo: Kigigha is a three time Nigerian National Champion. He is well known for being a master at the English Opening. Kigigha's goal is to become Nigeria's first ever Grandmaster.

IM Oladapo Adu: Oladapo was Nigerian national champion in 1995 and has been living in the United States for more than the last decade. Oladapo is the director of Dapsaychess, which runs chess clubs and classes in schools all over Nigeria. Due to his blitz prowess, his nickname in Nigeria is: "fastest from the West."

CM Sorungbe Ademola: Sorungbe is the eighth-ranked player in Nigeria and is a seasoned chess writer. He has articles published in several editions of the famous New in Chess Yearbook

IM Bunmi Olape: Bunmi is a legend in Nigerian chess, having represented the national team in seven olympiads.

FM John Oyeyemi Fawole: The manager of the Abuja Rockstars, Fawole won the Nigerian National Championship in 2013. He is the executive director of BruvsChess Academy, a chess organization that teaches chess as a school program to children.

It will be great for Nigerian chess fans to root on their top players against some of the best competition in the world.

The PRO Chess League welcomes the Abuja Rockstars!
