Nizhny Novgorod is the fifth-largest city in Russia, an important center of industry, transport and science. In Soviet times, this city was named Gorky after Maxim Gorky, the famous writer born here.

The brightest event in the city's chess history took place in 2013 when it held the Russian championship Superfinal with Kramnik, Karjakin, Svidler Nepomniachtchi and other top grandmasters and women's grandmasters. In recent years, the city has frequently held Privolzhsky federal district championships. This district groups 14 regions, whose main cities stand on the Volga river or its tributaries.

Novgorod, a vibrant city.

The team groups proficient players who would like to test their chess skills against opponents from other corners of the world.

GM Evgeny Shaposhnikov: Shaposhnikov is an active player and coach (peak rating 2578 FIDE) living in Saratov. He is the Russian Under-20 champion (Kazan 2001), champion (1999) and prize-winner (2000) of the St. Petersburg city championship, and multiple-times Russian Student Champion. Evgeny has often visited Novgorod and played in tournaments there. Shaposhnikov also has two Titled Tuesday victories to his name so he has proven speed-chess success on Chess.com. Check out his accurate speed skills in action.

FM Mikhail Gorozhanin: With many local successes Gorozhanin is a fine board two. He is a multiple-times winner (in 2013 and 2015) and runner-up (third in 2014 and second in 2016) of Nizhny Novgorod region championship. Hi is also the "Kubok Nadezhdy" chess tournament winner (2016). Perhaps even more importantly for the rapid format in the PRO Chess League, he is the reigning Privolzhsky federal district blitz champion.

CM Anton Yatsenko: Yatsenko is the Nizhny Novgorod region blitz championship runner-up in 2016.

FM Ilya Dudukin and CM Evgeny Pristalov are strong bottom boards, they also have many regional championships to their name and are looking to prove that even lesser-known Russian masters are still the terror of titled players inmost of the world.

The PRO Chess League welcomes the Gorky Stormbringers!
