The Russian team won the gold medals at the World Youth U16 Olympiad in Kocaeli, Turkey. It was a 10-round Swiss tournament with 26 teams. Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa were allowed to enter multiple teams. The standings were determined based on board points, not on match points.

The team from Armenia was leading with two rounds to go, but eventually Russia overtook them. Armenia won the silver medals and Iran finished third. Not having lost a single match, Azerbaijan missed out on the medals.
