Yesterday was the 65th birthday of Kevin McNally, who for our purpose had his first big screen role as others too did as an HMS Ranger crewman in The Spy Who Loved Me 1977 and spoke the very first line. Born in Bristol, he grew up in Birmingham and attended local schools before starting his career with Birmingham Repertory Company. Gained a scholarship to RADA and has had lots of stage and screen roles before and after the Bond film, amassing 152 screen credits - Castor in I Claudius 1976, Drake Carne in Poldark 1977, Hugo Lang in Doctor Who 1984, Cry Freedom 1987, Kirov in Stalin 1992, Entrapment 1999, Shackleton 2002, Johnny English 2003 – but from then international fame as Joshamee Gibbs in all of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and only three have been in all – since then Life on Mars 2006, Valkyrie 2008, Wuthering Heights 2009, Downton Abbey 2011-12, voicework on Assassin’s Creed games as Robert Faulkner, Designated Survivor 2016-17, TURN: Washington’s Spies 2014-17, Unforgotten 2018, The Outpost 2018, Capt Mainwaring in Dad’s Army – The Lost Episodes 2019, Catherine the Great 2019, Das Boot 2018-20, and Bernard Ingham in The Crown 2020, still combining these with regular stage in West End and Broadway. Married to Phyllis Logan with two children, they live in Chiswick, West London. We believe he is worthy of a match in his honour and hope you will accept.
