Long ago we missed the 70th birthday of Ed Harris, who has been significant in so many great productions, but has rarely been honoured for the quality he brings. Out of a total of 107 screen credits he has won just a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for the mini-series Game Change 2012 as Senator John McCain (Emmy nomination), but has four Best Actor Oscar nominations – Apollo 13 1995 (Golden Globe as well), The Truman Show 1998 (BAFTA + GG as well), Pollock 2000 & The Hours 2002 (BAFTA +GG as well), plus he was nominated for Emmys for Empire Falls 2005 {GG as well) & Westworld 2016, as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Jacknife 1989 plus seven Screen Actors Guild nominations, although won one for Apollo 13. Other memorable roles The Right Stuff 1983, Walker 1987, Glengarry Glen Ross 1992, The Firm 1993, The Rock 1996, Enemy at the Gates 2001, A History of Violence 2005, Gone Baby Gone 2007, Appaloosa 2008, Snowpiercer 2013, Resistance 2020, The Lost Daughter 2021 and he is in Top Gun: Maverick soon to be seen. He is also known as the voice of Jason Hudson on the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops and has of course been the Man in Black in every series of Westworld to date. Born in Englewood and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey his parents and family were from Oklahoma and after graduating high school in Tenafly he went to Columbia University in New York where he played football, but got a taste for acting & returned to Oklahoma (his family having moved to New Mexico) and enrolled in the University’s theatre department. After graduation he moved to Los Angeles 1973 and achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts where he soon began to pick up work with minor roles on TV and film – The Rockford Files, Lou Grant, Barnaby Jones, Hart to Hart, Chips. The same year as The Right Stuff he made his New York stage debut in Fool for Love and won an Obie for outstanding actor. Has since been awarded an Honorary degree at School of the Art Institute in Chicago 2003, where his wife of 39 years Amy Madigan was born and raised, and was inducted 2019-20 New Jersey Hall of Fame in Arts and Entertainment category.
