Exactly 100 years ago, there was celebrate the first major professional chess tournament in the world: San Sebastián, 1911.
The organization invited 17 chess masters, considered the best in the world. The response was an unprecedented success, 15 of them were accepted, only Atkins and Lasker refused to play in San Sebastián.
On 24 January 1911 the Asturian newspaper "El Noroeste" published rules and program of the tournament, including prizes and various details of the organization:
The champion tournament was Capablanca. He was 22 years old. His career in chess until then had been almost non- existent, despite having proven his talent after being champion Cuba in 12 years old and a convincing defeat Marshall in a single match (15-8).
