This is a thematic tournament for players who want to play/practice the King's Indian Defence: Classical variation. The starting position is as followed:
1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Nf3 0-0 6. Be2 e5
The classical variation is one of the critical main lines in the King's Indian defence. After Black's hypermodern set-up, with his bishop fianchettoed on g7, the central strike 6...e5 signals the beginning of an epic and exciting opening struggle. It is this fight that fundamentally tests chess ideologies: classical chess versus hyper-modern chess in a whole board fight. Black's central plan is to go for the jugular with a haymaker on the kingside. He does this by flooding white's kingside with his pawns with the major drawback of leaving himself exposed to the elements on the queenside. Whilst white will look to pick black apart on black's underdeveloped queenside, black hopes to simply checkmate his opponent on the kingside.
There are many exciting lines for both players to go into:
- The Main line Mar del plata: 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5 Ne7
- The old main line 7.0-0 Nbd7
- The petrosian system 7.d5
- Gligoric system 7. Be3
- The exchange variation 7.dxe5 dxe5 8.Qxd8 Rxd8
