g6 to block the previous check would have taken white's knight

White has Nxg6 winning the rook (...hxg6 then Qxh8) but I think mate could've been avoided. If black moves the rook to g8 then white has Ne5 dis.+, black blocks with the rook, Nxg6..hxg6, Qxg6+..Ke7, Qxe4+.

Just about right for a Sunday puzzle.  The first move was so inviting that it would be the first thing to think about.  Nothing to stop the queen from checking; and black's one escape move was forced.

The final checkmate move was obvious from the start - unstopable and cuts off any remaining escape squares.

I don't think there were any remotely possible alternatives to think about, but I confess that I never looked at anything else, since the solution 1-2 punch was so inviting and obvious.

It would be interesting to see the opening plays that led up to this.  Might be instructive to see black's mistakes.

Troub.le with puzzles like this is that you can see the moves right away since there is a strong cheque withe the queen seeing an unprotected sqaure.  I apprecxiate the difficulty in coming up with a puzzle on a daily basis, instructive and imaginative.  That is never easy, but there is room for improving this daily puzzle since a large number of people grown used to it as part of the daily routine

it would be better if you don't give away the objective of the puzzle.
