    What about 1. Rg3 Kf8 2. Rf3 threatening 3. Rxf7?

    5. Qxd4

    If 5. Qxd4 Red8 6. Rg8+ Kg8 7.Rg3+ Kf7 8. Qg7+ Ke8. White will win this game, but it is not mate in 5.

    5...Red8 6. Rd7+ Kg8 7. Qg7# Actually in the solution there is also Qxd4 at some point that extends it for at least one move.

    No! In the solution Black has no time for ...Qxd4! Wink

    If you mean instead of 2...Bxd7: 2 Rd7!! Qxd4 3 Qh6+ Qg7 4 Qxg7#

    This all hinges on black taking whites rook on d7, not a forced move & black has better moves I think.

    I found the solution on my second try and it's a good one, but I think my first try also works. 1. Rg3+ , Kf8  2. Rf3  and white threatens mate in two moves with Rxf7 and black can only cover it temporarily by sacrificing his queen, like 2. - , Qxd4  3. Rxf7+ , Kg8  4. Rg7+ , Kh8  5. Qxd4 and mate soon follows with a discover check.

    Or 2. - , Kg8  3. Rxf7 , Bxf7  4. Qxf7+ , Kh8  5. Qf6+ , Kg8  6. Rg3++

    2. - , Rxe7  3. Qh8++ loses immediately.
