Wouldn't 1.Qh5+ frist; also, transfer into just as quick a mating

(I messed up.  My response is in the quote box.)

    No.
    1.Qh5+   Kfg8
    If 2.f7+, then ... Kg7  and if 3.Qchecks K, 3....Kxf7 and escapes
White's best move is 3.Rf1, protecting the pawn while the queen chases the black king.  Black can use the tempo to move his Bishop (to d6 or e7) giving his rook coverage of the full 8th rank and double covering white's promotion square f8.

White's victory is uncertain, and it certainly is not mate-in-3.

Somehow, I ended up posting my comment in the quote box.  It threw me off completely in trying to analyze the outcome if white moved
    1. Qh5+ instead of 1.f7.  It is a difficult analysis, because white's best move after 1. ... Kg8 is 2. Qg6+  (back to the original position).  Trying to fashion a win for white after a sequence of less than optimal moves is difficult, especially since white has opened up many variations for black, and the game is probably decided by who makes the NEXT mistake.

Recreating the original position with 2. Qg6+ looks fine, without any variations.  The mate is just extended by two.

Tentatively advanced the pawn & only then saw the solution. Better to have to think harder though - not very challenging.
