    Black might have a chance if after 4. Rxd8+ he plays 4... Kh7, then after 5. Bg7+ ... Nh5 6. Rxh8+ ... Kxg6, the mating square on f6 is guarded by the knight

    If 4...Kh7 not 5.Bg7+ but 5. Rxh8+ Kxh8 6. Qf6+.  Whether 6...Kg8 or 6...Kh7 then 7. Qg7++.

    Exactly, Terracotta. What the hell's wrong with 1. ... RxB??????? This was not a forced mate, as presented...

    Ahhh...thanks Italicus. I stand corrected.  RxB leads to mate in 6...

    2. Nf6 also is correct - giving booth rooks ability to attack at king file

    I think if 2. Nf6+ Nxf6 3. Rd8+ Ne8 may hold out more than the eight moves.  If 3...Rxd8 then 4. Rxd8+ transposes to the main line.

    can someone please explain why after 1. Bxh6+, the rook doesn't just take the bishop?

    I like the mate in seven:

    6. Bg5 Kg7

    7. Bf6#

    @Terricotta:
    1. Bxh6+  Rxh6 2. Qf6+ Nxf6 (2. ... Kg8 or Kh7 Qxf7+) 3. exf6+ Kg8 (3. ... Kh7 4. Ng5+ Kg8  5. Rd8+ with mate to follow) 4. Rd8+ Rxd8 5. Rxd8+ Kh7 6. Ng5#

    A quicker way to lose

    Because RXF7+ NxRF7, QF6+... and from there you have lots of options for mate.

     not really,black can move out of check on first move or take Bh6 with Rh8xBh6,which looks like it was better move,because once back K opts to move out of Bh6 check i think all moves are forced after that

     no,first move is not forced,Rh8xBh6,and when NITE blocks rook,rook takes nite,K CAN MOVE TO H7,I LIKE 1.Bh6...Rh8xBh6for better first move sequence,changes whole complextion of game

     your right,it not only cheks Q but it changes whole complextoin of game.the only way white can recheck is Qf6, or Nf6,Q must move or check with Nf6 letting K move to g7 keeping white Q in check with rook protected by K.now there are a variety of moves,and remember white is one move from being mated,next white move is critical,to end result of game
