Note that if White promotes to a queen it's only a draw, as the position after ...Kg4 Qxh1 is stalemate.
wow! a topic about underpromotion.
I'm so embarrased that I missed that underpromotion.
well actually i think after queen promotion 1... Kg4
2. Qa4+ Kf/h3, and then 3.Qb3 to chase after the king with one bishop help and black queen stuck on corner it isn't hard to mate black. and considering two bishops i say the mate moves are 50-50.
So long as Black plays 3. ...Kg2 in your line, Treeborn, I'm afraid impossible to give mate there. You can confirm this with any chess engine or an endgame tablebase such as the one at http://www.k4it.de/index.php?topic=egtb&lang=en
OH! I too missed the beautiful underpromotion. Arrrrrrgggghhhh
It even crossed my mind that two bishops could mate as well, but then I thought that tactics trainer usually likes the quickest mate possible. I can't believe I didn't check for the stalemate.
the last move really sucks, only those with a malfunctioning mouse are solving this.
wow that one really surprised me. i didn't realize that there was ever a position in which it is more valuable to promote a bishop over a queen! i've seen knight over queen, but that's a different story. the point of this problem is that sometimes you need to underpromote in order to avoid stalemate
Doh! I promoted to a queen. Absolutely brilliant underpromotion. Best puzzle I have played in weeks.
i saw the underpromotion would win, but i missed Kg4 after the queen promotion...
Pass Rate: 3.8% haha
Promote to a bishop, I thought... it will be classier, I thought... No, the mate will be faster if I promote to a queen, which is what TT usually goes for, I said... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Underwhelmed, just looks like a study
I missed the stalemate.... I should have known with so much time on the clock that there was something else to look for.
Amazing that the problem rating is only 1971 given the fact that only 4% have solved it.
