Low rated players are not too good, its just that chess is a tough game for absolute beginners and in order win games you need to put the time and effort in to improve.
You should practice puzzles like this https://www.chess.com/puzzles/problem/500838 until you can do them in your sleep.

Took me quite a long time to reach my pathetic rating. I believe natural born talent is the biggest factor in chess skill.
That has always been a debate.
I started at 23 years old too so that is always a problem.

Ironically...no matter your rating you always feel dumb. When I was 1200 all I wanted was 1600. Now I'm trying for 1800 and I still feel as dumb as always.
