A short while ago we missed the 90th birthday of Claire Bloom, a true star of stage, screen and television over many decades, with 125 screen credits and a CBE in 2013 (Commander of the British Empire). She won a BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer for Chaplin’s Limelight 1952 and for Best Actress in Shadowlands 1986, but was also nominated for Brideshead Revisited 1981, for which she was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy; she was nominated 1979 for Best Spoken Word recording for Wuthering Heights; over her years she appeared in classics such as Richard III 1955, Alexander the Great 1956, Look Back in Anger 1959, Anna Karenina on TV with Connery 1961, Wuthering Heights on TV 1962, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold 1965, A Doll’s House 1973, Hera in Clash of the Titans 1981, The Camomile Lawn 1992, Doctor Who 2009-10 (The Woman in The End of Time), The King’s Speech 2010, Doc Martin 2005-13, Summer of Rockets 2019. Even in her 91st year, she is still in pre-production on another project. Born in Finchley, North London in her younger years her family lived in Cardiff, Bristol, Cornwall & New Milton in Hampshire, and she was educated at Badminton School in Bristol & Fernhill Manor in New Milton. During WW2 she was evacuated in the blitz to an uncle in Florida close to Miami, where she sang at a hotel there regularly. In her teens she lived with her mother in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, and went to a dancing school in Manhattan. After the war they returned to live in Curzon Street, Mayfair and she trained at the Guildhall School, then at the Central School of Speech and Drama before starting her career at Oxford Repertory, then Stratford-upon-Avon before appearing in the West End, and after Limelight a long spell at the Old Vic. For ten years she was married to Rod Steiger, with whom she had a daughter, and they lived in New York and California. In the 90s she was married to Philip Roth and they lived in Connecticut.
