Hi! I'm James Coleman from England, now 42 years old - ( so way past my prime happy.png ) - and I started to play chess at age 7.

I've competed in many international tournaments around the world and experienced all the highs and lows that go with competitive chess.

Peak Ratings: FIDE 2262, ECF 223

I’ve not been active as a player since 2015, now focussed solely on coaching.

For the last 20 years I've been a chess professional - primarily as a coach but I've also worked at some of the major tournaments, such as the London Chess Classic, and several world Championship matches.

As a coach I believe the key to improvement is enjoying the game and setting realistic goals. I'm mostly self-taught in chess so I know what sort of study methods don't work well, and can help you avoid these pitfalls. So, whether you're simply in a bit of a rut or you want to make serious progress I'm available to help you reach your goals. With that being said, please keep the goals realistic - there’s no point being a 40 year old beginner and wanting lessons to become a titled player - I can’t help you with that :-)

For coaching enquiries it helps to have some info about yourself, such as how long you've been playing, OTB experience, rating, and especially your time-zone, so that we can plan what's best for you! I read it all carefully! (I never just churn out lesson material), I want to help you properly to become the player you know you can be happy.png

I try to respond to messages very quickly, and will usually get back to you within a couple of hours.

Online lessons with Skype are $40 per hour (£30 GBP)

Training games with summary afterwards and recommended improvement ideas is $30 per hour.

If the lesson or training session goes over the allotted time, as it often does, there will never be any request for additional payment, or anything of that sort, so you don't have to worry on that side of things, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the lesson. ( Well, don't relax too much, chess is difficult happy.png )

I'm also always happy for students to contact me by email or message between the sessions for any reason, whether it be to clarify something from a lesson, or to see what went wrong with a recent game, or recommend a book, etc. There is no charge for this of course.

Face to face coaching in London or Surrey is £50 per session, for elsewhere in UK, send me a message with some details.

In the meantime, good luck with your chess :-)
