We recently passed the 70th anniversary of the birth of the comic genius who was Robin Williams, who sadly died in 2014. He was famous as a comedian for his wild improvised stream-of-consciousness comedy dialogue where he would do cultural references, impersonations and one-liners with rapid switching between. However he was a sensitive and gifted actor too and built 112 screen credits, winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Good Will Hunting 1997, having been nominated for Best Actor for Good Morning Vietnam 1987(won Golden Globe) Dead Poets Society 1989 & The Fisher King 1991(won Golden Globe), with too many other nominations to list, including from BAFTA. He broke through as Mork in Happy Days 1978-79 & Popeye 1980, winning an Emmy and Golden Globe for Mork & Mindy 1978, then followed a career including The World According to Garp 1982, Moscow on the Hudson 1984, Awakenings 1990, Hook 1991, Aladdin 1992 as the genie, Mrs Doubtfire 1993, Jumanji 1995, What Dreams May Come & Patch Adams 1998, Insomnia 2002, Night at the Museum 2006 & sequels, Happy Feet 2006 & sequel and many more. He was presented with a Cecil B De Mille Golden Globe in 2005 and named a Disney Legend in 2009, having over the years completed narration for different rides and attractions at DisneyWorld. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was educated at elementary school in Lake County, Illinois; raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit) and educated Detroit Country Day School until senior year of high school when they moved to Seacliff, San Francisco when he was 16. Graduated from Redwood High School, Larkspur, CA (north of SF); studied political science at Claremont Men’s College (Claremont CA)& theatre at College of Marin, Kentfield (Marin County), where he played Fagin in Oliver! before enrolling at the Juilliard School (NYC) to focus on theatre. Turned from acting and did stand-up in comedy clubs LA & SF. Moved to Tiburon. Paradise Cay, Marin County in the early 2000s and also owned a home and vineyard in St Helena, Napa, Northern CA; also co-owned Rubicon restaurant in San Francisco. He was a huge fan of rugby and particularly the New Zealand All Blacks, and a massive fan of Monty Python, a great friend of Billy Connolly, his favourite band being Genesis & Phil Collins. When he died there were impromptu memorials at locations from his television and film career, such as the bench in Boston's Public Garden featured in Good Will Hunting, the Pacific Heights, San Francisco home used in Mrs. Doubtfire, the sign for Parrish Shoes in Keene, New Hampshire where parts of Jumanji were filmed and the Boulder, Colorado home used for Mork & Mindy.
