The Café de la Régence attracted the greatest minds and personages of the era: Diderot, Voltaire, Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin, Robespierre, a young Napoleon Bonaparte...and even Marx and Engels. They gathered to discuss ideas and to play chess. Among the great chess players that attended the Café de la Régence are Philidor, Morphy, Saint-Amant, Stauton, de Legal, Harrwitz, etc. The Café de la Regénce, located on rue Saint-Honoré near the Louvre on la Place du Palais-Royal, functioned between 1681 and 1910.
