Battles and Leaders is a wonderful compendium of first hand accounts of the Civil War as published by The CenturyMagazine between November 1884 and November 1887. It is an invaluable historic record, but the reader ned be warned that memories may be distorted through the lens of time and the unvarnished truth may give way to burnishing reputations. Then agaain, we must be cautious of those caveats in reading most of the human record!
