Independence Rock State Historic Site is a large, impressive granite rock formation in Wyoming. During the time of expansion of settlements from the east to the west in the U.S., Independence Rock became an iconic landmark in memory of the over half a million pioneers who traveled west along the Oregon, California, Mormon, and Pony Express trails. Those traveling into the west along these routes would begin their journey in the early spring, in the hopes of reaching Independence Rock by July 4. The landmark became known as a goal in the journey and a resting place for weary travelers. It was also a place to add one's name to history. The granite at the site hosts carvings by 5,000 pioneers who left their names in the stone, earning it the name "Great Register of the Desert." Source: TravelWyoming.com
