Today is the 60th birthday of Michael J Fox. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, when he was ten the family moved to Burnaby, Vancouver, British Columbia. On reaching 18 and deciding on acting as a career, he moved to Los Angeles and found it hard going at first until he was selected for television roles. He now has five Primetime Emmys – Family Ties 1986, 87, 88 (Golden Globe 1989), Spin City 1996 (Golden Globes 1998, 1999 & 2000), Rescue Me 2004 and 12 other Emmy nominations & 5 Golden Globe nominations for Boston Legal 2004, Adventures of an Incurable Optimist 2009 & The Good Wife 2009. Amongst numerous other awards won a Grammy 2010 for the Best Spoken Word album Always Looking Up. He has a total of 75 screen credits and will be best remembered internationally as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future films 1985-90 and whilst mostly in comedy has shown drama skill too eg Casualties of War 1989; also voiced the title character in the Stuart Little films 1999-2005. Life has not been kind to him always as he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991, but he has fought on and campaigned vigorously towards a cure. He and his family bought a new-built house in Quogue, New York, though live primarily in Manhattan, and he has been awarded an honorary degree by New York University – but he also has a theatre named after him in his home town of Burnaby and was also awarded an honorary degree by the University of British Columbia and made an Officer of the Order of Canada 2010.
