I receive a lot of messages from fellow chess.com members. Sometimes I am frightened when I open my mailbox since I know very well that I won't be able to reply to many of them. There are requests like "I am an attacking player, what opening should I play as White and what openings should I play as Black against 1.e4 and 1.d4."  make me wonder: did the sender expect some superficial advice like " Play King's Gambit for White, and Najdorf Sicilian for Black against 1.e4 and the King's Indian defense against 1.d4"? Or were they asking me to devise a complete opening repertoire, something that takes tons of time?  As a rule I answer questions like this by referring to my series "Openings for Tactical Players". You can find them on chess.com and pick the opening that appeals to you the most.

But sometimes I get questions that are impossible to answer, unless I invest a lot of time.  When I get a game and a request to review it then what should I do? My advice is to send requests like this to Mr. Silman. In his weekly column he deals exactly with this kind of questions and I am sure you'll enjoy his instructional and witty writing.

Fortunately, recently I got two messages that I enjoyed a lot. Both of them were regarding my hit parade in this article: http://www.chess.com/article/view/positional-rxe6-sacrifice-part-two

One of them was from IM David Pruess (dpruess on chess.com).  He mentioned a game with a Rxe6 sacrifice that I had never seen.  You must see this gem to understand the mix of the feelings I had after playing through the game:

From one side I was ashamed, because how could I not know such a beautiful game, especially one where the great Anatoly Karpov was completely annihilated? Being a nice person, David tried to comfort me that it was just a blitz game and that no one knows all the games.  True, and yet to miss such a beauty was almost a crime on my part.  Fortunately the joy of playing through the game far outweighed anything else.  Of course if I knew this game my hit parade would have been different and Mikhail "The Magician" Tal would easily be the winner.

The second message that I enjoyed came from FM  Kostya Kavutskiy (hellokostya).  He sent me a game that I knew very well, but somehow just forgot to include into my article. Here I offer the game as three exercises for you to compare your attacking skills to Tal's main apprentice - GM Shirov.

It looks like White completely dominates in the center, doesn't he?

How should Black increase his initiative?
Now finish Black's powerful attack in style!
Having two hot attacks like these sent to me (and considering the title of Shirov's book "Fire on Board") I felt like my whole mailbox was on fire. But these are exactly the kind of messages that I enjoy and appreciate.  Thank you guys!

How convenient, claiming that i am an "idiot" and "brainless",claiming that i am the one who " bad-mouth"ed although in fact only you did, without commenting on the facts that i have wrote. This is your low level,i see. There is no need to pay attention to you anymore.

It's disgusting that such [edited] people even have the right to post in the forums. Guess that's the one of the few drawbacks of freedom of speech. Nonentities also get the right to toss dirt at other people and bad-mouth them for no reason. I wish he could make at least one (1) valid argument. Epic fail!

no i mean it for both. i don't always get to every thread.

Sorry David,i forgot only IMs like  IMCheap or Natalia can use any offensive language. (His message which contained idiot was posted for 3 days without a response, while it took no more than 10 mins for you to respond to my own...).

But seriously ok it makes sense.

    IM dpruess

let's leave out the part where we call each other "idiots" please.

    YoniKer

IMCheap you are not that brilliant are you :)  Your own claims have either  simple internal  logical contradictions or are not inline with facts(shouldnt expected more from Natalia's second):

    1.

". She has been 2501 before ... She is actually a Grandmaster of Russia, if you know what this word means... Ordinary 2600s don't.".

Her high is 2501,but ordinary 2600s don't have this title. Hmmm. Thanks for the info.

Since you lack a lot in IQ points, let me clarify something- 2600 players,on average, are much better than 2500s players, since 2600 is a bigger number than 2500.

     2. " Elite players occasionally draw people with 2450 FIDE one on one. And you can't expect them to win simuls 9-1. You have no idea what you are talking about.".

Since, again, you lack a lot in IQ points, and you should consider a brain surgery,i will actually explain to you that i did not claim that an elite player will score 100% against her level. only 90% :)

In 1992,Kasparov held a 12 games simul against the best players in Argertina, all of them are GMs,all are better than her. The result was 9-3.

    http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chesscollection?cid=1015710

Should i take my time and explain to you that if that happened, and if we will admit that she is much worse than the weakest one of them,we should expect a much better result than 9-3,making 9-1 a very likely result? I will just make a comment back, that you are the one who doesnt know what he is talking about.

3."" Any person with a tiny bit of understanding of chess knows that it is not possible to give recommendations online without knowing in detail the personality of the player, his chess level and other information."

So either you did not read her message,or that you did not understand,i would bet the second option. Those people did give her information.

For you to understand the messages in this forum,i have a few suggestions to make your life easier:

    A. If you know someone who can translate it to your mother tongue that is great, otherwise pay someone to do so.

B.Because you lack IQ points please read the translated version only when you can concentrate, not when you are tired for example.

    C. If there is something that you don't understand, refer to anyone who is smarter than you (I would say probably anyone you know, who is not a family).

    D. Read every message at least 5-6 times until you grasp the general idea.

    E. Use a flow chart to understand which message refers to what message, and while doing that reread the message again. If you are still in doubt, consult the smarter person that you chose. If not available, always assume that you are wrong(it is a very safe assumption) or that you simply don't fully understand something (another safe assumption) and wait patiently until that smarter person is available.

I am not sorry for remarking on her offensive arrogant claims, since she is a weak player for a professional player and that is a fact. How much money a year a male player of her level would make? Oops sorry,i guess you know the answer to that :)

    @ YoniKer:

'Yeah!' - and I think that 'you[!]' should be 'allowed' to get challenged into an online [chess] match 'here' with Natalia, so we could all see as to how you'd 'justify' yourself in proving your 'point' here ... Then! - if you could perhaps draw a game with her - you may continue to have something to rant about here - alright? - 'champ' ...

And that's the way I see it! ...

    IM Vlad_Akselrod

Yoniker, you are just an ignorant idiot. Let me prove it step by step.

"2400 is a very good rating for an amateur player, but it is a low rating for any professional player. She is def not a IM level player. The average IM is around 2450-2500,something that she has  never achieved. Check her record against male players titled IM if you dont believe me :) "

Natalia's rating is 2476. She has been 2501 before and has qualified for the IM title in 2004. She is actually a Grandmaster of Russia, if you know what this word means. This title is way more prestigious than the GM one. Very few Russian GMs have this title - Kramnik, Grischuk and the like. Ordinary 2600s don't.

    2. "For example, any player from the elite can have a simul with 10 players of her level and score around 9-1..."

False. Elite players occasionally draw people with 2450 FIDE one on one. And you can't expect them to win simuls 9-1. You have no idea what you are talking about.

    3. Any person with a tiny bit of understanding of chess knows that it is not possible to give recommendations online without knowing in detail the personality of the player, his chess level and other information. Natalia's comment was a joke, a comparison of business/medical industry/chess. Anyone who got offended and found something insulting in it should consider buying a few IQ points on the black market.

Although I think this idea that you have a problem with women is based on ignorace, I must point out that being married and having a problem with women are different things and one doesn't cancel out the other.

    YoniKer

I am married,so to say that i have a problem with women is rediculous.

I have never sent her any message!!  But to talk haughty as she did, should make anyone feel uncomfortable.

2400 is a very good rating for an amateur player, but it is a low rating for any professional player. She is def not a IM level player. The average IM is around 2450-2500,something that she has  never achieved. Check her record against male players titled IM if you dont believe me :)

If anything,I do have a problem with rediculous titles like "WGM". Why should seperate titles be given to women?!  Maybe that makes her feel as if she is a good player. She is definetly not.

For example, any player from the elite can have a simul with 10 players of her level and score around 9-1...

In any case what that i don't like is weak players talking badly about weaker players.

    ClavierCavalier

Where did that weak, pointless women's lib stuff come from?  No one brought up her sex until you called attention to it with this BS.

    solskytz

Guys who have issues with women can't really go through life happy... something needs to be changed in the attitude.

I can get that Natalia's comment may not be seen as the nicest for everybody... but she has a right to be a woman and do and say anything she likes :-) and by the way, 2440+ or whatever her rating is is definitely strong IM level - and she's been also to 2501, GM norms or not.

I played and even beat IM players in informal play - but I'm still full of admiration to their prowess, chess understanding, quick vision and the ability to do incredible things on the chessboard (though not to me on every game... also my many draws count for something...). They can give hell of a lot of advice - even if they are women. Come on!

    MILK_czech

YoniKer, you mad bro? Your rant is ridiculous. What gives you the right to be The Judge of Morale here? Her comment was simple and clear about her feelings, no specific offense to be seen there...

The only thing that I can think of is that you sent some request like she mentioned to her and now you feel angry that she might think like that? :)

    ClavierCavalier

She was talking about people she's never met or looked at their playing style asking about openings when there are tons.

    YoniKer

Natalia Pogonina's comment- I actually don't like it.

Yes,actually people pay a dinner with warren buffett 100,000$. Since one word of advice from him might be worth even more.

Yes,when people go to the gym, they ask the trainer for an advice.

Or a better analogy-yes,when people see a bodybuilder they are looking for an advice.

    What an arrogant comment!

All of those people are actually trying to improve their play. Makes sense t o introduce their name and some more information about themselves when asking you for an advice,oh goddess.

Your only "achievement" is to have a low rating of 2400 (it is very low for a professional player) AND being a woman at the same time. An amazing fit!

When you are Kasparov's or Fischer's level be as arrogant as they were. Some people won't like it but i sure will. NOT when you are less than mediocre. NOT when you are not even a IM player level (do you even have even one GM norm?). Please.

One of the typical messages I am getting over and over again is this:

Hi, I am A. My style in chess is B. I like openings C and D. For some reason I got stuck. What should I do to become a better player?

Sounds hilarious, but it's a true story. I wonder if someone is messaging businessmen and asking them how to get rich quickly. Or asking doctors online how to get fit and good-looking asap. Smile
