Fool's Mate

Last updated on Sat, 09/27/2008 at 6:41pm.

Fool's mate, also known as the "two-move checkmate", is the quickest possible checkmate in the game of chess.

The checkmate occurs extremely rarely in actual games, since it requires the player with the White pieces to be a willing accomplice in his own downfall.

There are several possible variations on the Fool's Mate, all of which result in White being checkmated after just 2 moves, but the most common form is:

1.f3 e5 2.g4 Qh4#

I have known this trap for years, but I find it strange that it should be called "Fool's Mate".  After all, only one line of attack to the "Fool's King" is made available; so, White is not being so foolish as to open up the entire mid-section!  By a quirk of the geometry of the chess board, there is a very quick refutation.  But, it is not such a foolish agenda.

Yes that is the fastest way, only if you are playing a 7 year old child, a true fools mate is 4 moves or less.

u could also do the same move by playing f4 , g4 instead of f3 , g4 but anyway its the same thing...... you get checkmated either way!

How many people has this actually happened to? I'm just curious since, even with my minimal talents I never had it happen to me. Scholar's mate yes, when I was younger, but not fools mate!

it appears i made a pigs ear of that diagram lol but one gets my drift. while ive got your attention, i remember a few years ago, getting my butt kicked by a woman no less, in a really clever sequence. it involves no more than ten moves and a sacrificed queen. could anybody show me how this is done please so i can get my rating up at the expence and embarrassment of younger inexperienced players. (only joking). i forget how to do it and i thought it was brilliant. thanks

I've won at least one game of Fool's mate against a novice player.  However, I've won at least three games against regular chess players as White with Legal's mate back in the '70s.

I think the first winner of the Fool's mate is that the inventor of the Fool's mate. It was probaly that he won it to his opponent or he invented it as a chess puzzle.

A couple of years ago my kid went to a school district tournament (not USCF).  I was shocked to see some of the younger kids were using this--and successfully.  The good news is that at least they were using a plan, and they understood it.  The bad news is that the queen brought out too early went unpunished!

If i recall correctly, I may have fallen for that two or three times (it took me that long to learn not to play that particular sequence. I have also fallen for the 'four move fool's mate'. I've learned since then.

I've heard of fools mate, but I've never actually seen it happen.  It's such an unusual opening that I wonder if I ever will.  I have seen the 4 move checkmate a few times... albeit against inexperienced players. It's funny when your opponet sits down for what everyone expects to be a long game of chess, only to lose the game in less than 2 minutes.

If an inexperienced player you are facing opens with 1. f4, proceed with 1...e5 and see if they might back their pawn up with 2. g3!
If they do 2...exf4 3. gxf4 Qh4# mates :)

with kings gambit you can find the kingside pretty weak if they don't move the king's knight out early.  It's pretty much the same idea if they don't move the knight; just get your queen in there and wreak havoc.

I think Fool' Mate is really done to first timer in chest. You don't make opennings like that if you play chess a lot. If you win by that move, I guarantee you your opponent has no knwoledge in chess playing.

Actually it's my favorite game!!!!!!!!!!

I was dying to play chess with my new chess set I recieved one Christmas. My trouble was finding someone to play. I had played a few games with my neighbor friends (enough to know how the pieces moved) but they were not really into it. My uncle was over and I asked him to show me how to play. He did not want to. I asked again and again, then finally set up the board in front of him and made my first move. Uncle Jim gave in and made a move. I made my second move and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, the game was over! I was checkmated!!!

I said "lets play again". He refused, and never played me again, ever.

It was my most inspirational game. I have tryed to improve and learn ever since. It was truly humiliating!

In 1963 I was in Naples and my opponent played in a similar way, but with f4 and g4. Having seen the mate, he asked me for repeating the game, but I refused because the match was not individual, it was a match Rome - Naples. Signed the point we played another game like friends and...he won!

With the chess games I've played against my friend, and I have honestly never seen anyone do that to one another there. It's an interesting thing to know if you're up against a beginner, though - like me. If I tried that against someone - friend or otherwise - my opponent probably'd see through it in an instant. -_-
