The club/corporation was organized to cater the development of chess players in  Calapan City Oriental Mindoro(even in Oriental Mindoro) in 2006.  It  was  and will be the gate in the coming days  for the chess events  in the city.  The  club will not  be possible  without the help of its officers and members and the city governement representative Marvin Panahon.  From now on... let this site be the venue of a renaissance - chess rebirth in Calapan.

The 2008 Mayor Doy Leachon Open Chess Tournament held at ABC Hall Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro last September 20-21, 2008 ended with a resounding success.  Participated by 91 participants from all walks of like, the tournament was highlighted  by battles between the young turks against the veterans.  In the end, the veterans prevailed as most preserved their strenght by settling for quiet draws when facing one another then punishing the prodigies for their inaccuracies.  But, it can be seen that it will not take that long for the kids to topple the veterans.

The tournament happened to be the largest gathering of chess enthusiasts, thanks to the efforts of City Youth and Sports Development Department of Calapan City - headed by Marvin Panahon, United Chess Players of Calapan, In. Headed by Emmanuel B. Asi, and Chess Arbiters Association of the Philippines - headed by Rey Colitoy.

Aside from the cash prizes, at stakes are the automatic seeding of the top six finishers in Calapan City team if ever it will join the Intercities in Bacolod this October 6-12, 2008 and the Calapan team that will participate in the 2nd Gov. ACP Intertown Chess Team Championship to be held in November 2008.

Congratulations to all!  We are all winners!

        CHAMPION  - Cesar Cunanan      6.5/7

        2nd Placer  - Mel Acedera         6.0/7

        3rd Placer  - Emmanuel B. Asi   6.0/7

The Calapan City Inter-Collegete Chess Team Tournament ended today in good note.  Participated by 9/10 colleges in the city (Luna Goco Colleges did not field a team), the tournament has many highs than downs.

UCPCI joined the intercities in Tarlac last April 11-15, 2009 thru the sponsorhip of Calapan City Government spearheaded by CYSDD Head Marvin Panahon.

         Team Members were:

Board 1    -  Oscar James Buccat

                   2    -  Arnel Ortiz

                   3    -  Nicasio Rizo Jr.

                    4   -  Melencio Acedera

                    5   -  Emmanuel B. Asi

         Coach       - Esteban Alcantara

It was a wonderful experience!  Team members became closer and closer.  Our games were well played though we suffered losses.  But on the 14th the team decided to withdraw from the competition as our buddy Nicasio "Jun/Jcar" Rizo suffered an asthma attack coupled with complications that led to his immediate death.

We would like to thank City Mayor Aro, the City Sports Coordinators, DSWD and St. Peter personnel and all chess enthusiast who contributed money and undying  support to our buddy Jun Rizo. His body was brought to Calapan smoothly.

Our condolences to his wife Cristy and child.  Jun told our coach Steve before he died that he long dreamed of joining the team but his asthma prevented him most of the time.

After the incident most of team members told me that they will perhaps not play chess for a long time.  I told them, why should they, the death of our buddy is God's will and stopping from playing chess will be like killing our selves.

Last April 19 in short notice, we joined the Pinamalayan Chess Open which we dominated.  Special thanks to the organizers although the pairing system was below par we enjoyed the games.

During our stay there we exchanged views with other players.  We bought some chess DVDs to improve our games and more importantly we registered as member of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

The player should be in the playing hall before the start of the game otherwise, the player will be in default.  I arrived with three minutes to go.  Many players were punished.  My heart is pumping furiously I could'nt think well.

Arnel was a late replacement for Elmer Banaag who was not allowed by their company to compete.  Lucky for Calapan City, Arnel was there when the team needed him most.

Icing of the cake.  Team Calapan defeating DepEd Pasig B. Oscar played it safe as the team was already assured of team victory (3-1).

The 17th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship Southern Luzon Leg concluded last July 19, 2009.  Organized by Shell thru Tournament Director Alexander Dinoy and IA Gene Policarpio as Chief Arbiter, the Juniors and Kiddies were participated by 194 & 304 strong chess players respectively.

Calapan City had no participation for year 2007 and 2008 but this  year promised to have a bright prospect for the Calapenos because of good showing in the MIMAROPA and  Palarong Pambansa of the Kiddies and exposure of the Juniors in the local tournaments and exposure in the National Intercities in Tarlac.

The coaching staff goal for the Juniors to be on the upper 50% and Kiddies to be in the upper 30% in their Groups were achieve.  The Merilles as expected performed well as they landed in the top 20 in their division.  Our top player Nezil Arj Merilles was punished for holding the clock in game 5 of the very crucial game which lead to his defeat.  The team protested  the verdict to settle once and for all the our Calapan City chess players were not thought  to cheat during blitz games. Nezil could have been in the top if not for the verdict.  But that's all water under the bridge, there are still other tournaments (particularly Shell) were he can showcase his talent.

Intercities campaigner Oscar James Buccat emerged as the highers scorer in the Juniors with 4.5 points.  Local talent Reichelyn Villan, now playing board 4 at DLSU Lipa had 4 points.
