My answer is a bit more analytical. I would suggest that you first make sure you are recording your games. Then go back over the games you LOST (won games seldom tell you much) and analyze them. You can do that with an engine (many free on the internet are plenty good), or with a stronger player. Find out what your main weaknesses are - is it pawn structure, hanging pieces, endgame, combinations, etc. Then decide what book(s) will help you with that weakness. "Tactics" covers a lot of area. Be specific in what you need help with.
@storms tout...thanks for the link:-) I am not very good at analyzing my games, so I don't do it much:( regurgitated advice is still helpful. Guess what? OK just got back from the library with logical chess move by move, by Irving Chernev; How to improve your chess, by Fred Reinfeld and I.A. Horowitz + bagful of books for 3.00!!! I am stoked:-)

playing actual games (OTB games) and trying to learn tactics from them in analysis if you miss something.
chess.com live long/standard games----> analyze after
all of these are good tools.
i found seirawan's books pretty good, got most of em, i wouldn't say its worth buying 'winning chess openings', no real in depth coverage. personally i like the chess openings wikibooks but there are a lot of gaps. i also like the chess puzzle type books, they can be good for improving tactics/vision. i find my main problem with chess isn't seeing the tactics, which i can do a lot of times, it;s simply that i lose a lot of games with 1 or 2 stupid moves because my concentration goes, even when i'm ahead at points, and its been like that for years.
I recommend Tactics Time! 1001 Chess Tactics from the Games of Everyday Chess.

I am leaning towards Yasser Seirawan's winning chess tactics...I also need to analyze my games
@00bil I lost a won game today cause of a couple stupid mistakes
I ordered Yasser Seirawan's book winning chess tactics, but received winning chess endings by Seirawann instead...I messaged seller and they promptly refunded money. I get to keep book for free:-) Gotta love it.
the Martin Weteschnik book is really great. there is a newer edition out called chess tactics from scratch which i would say is the one to go for.
Okay, my tactics have gotten worse lately ( went from 1200+ TT to
