Avoiding c5 after 1.d4

Hey Guys!

I have a tournament coming up but there is a thing bugging me about playing 1.d4, which is my main opening.

After 1.d4, people may play 1...c5, or wait a move or 2 before playing it and will lead to complications as I don't know how to play the benoni.

Is there any way that I can avoid this horrible line?

Thanks,

I'm a little surprised to find this anti-benoni aversion (which seems to be decently prevelant), but I just played against an NM OTB and he avoided playing against the benoni with 3. e3, not that I would advocate this to be a strong move.

I'm not particularly convinced that playing 1... c5 is a particularly good move order.  There's probably some nice ways of exploting the move when it comes that early.

I've been playing 1.d4 for 2 years...recently, I was pelted with loses because of 1...c5...I beleive it's effective

In the past I sometimes have played 1.d4 c5 2.e3 if I didn't feel like playing d4d5.

But there are more options.

I played and play 1.d4 c5 myself as black, and some opponents simply play 2.c4 or 2.Nf3 or even 2.e4.

Thanks Achja...I'll try it out!

I wouldn't recommend half of these lines.  Try instead to play d5 and then what does white play?  There's no real way to avoid white playing c4, and then you'll be able to play the Taimanov which is a really good line for white and why IMO 1... c5 is a bad time to play the move.

In my opinion you should learn how to play the Benoni, it will be more effective for general chess improvement. The space advantage White gets in the Benoni is exactly what White wants from a 1. d4 opening. The pawn play of the Benoni is also seen in several different openings (there is a reason why Kmoch based his book on pawn play almost exclusively on Benoni structures).

2.Nf3 cxd4 3.Nxd4 d5 and black is better already. Unfortunately for black, 1.d4 c5 2.d5 is rather bad for him.

1. d4 c5 2. d5 Nf6 3. Nc3 is best. It's not exactly a Benoni because White didn't push c4.

Alright thanks everyone for the input!

Thanks...might try leaning the benoni!
