busting the schevenigen-style structure

this game with 8.a3!? against the Taimanov Sicilian shows a nice way for White to avoid long theory while throwing Black out of his sicilian and gooing into the more pssive schevenigen where White must be too cautious in order to claim his space advantage.

I show you this game to start a discussion on this variation, thanks in advance! (this line is covered in "Slay the Sicilian!", by Timothy Taylor)

Black played horribly passive from his 11th move on. With the queen already on c7 there is no need to support or trade the knight off before playing b5. You even acknowledge that black's play becomes suicidiely passive at move 14. What exactly do you want to discuss?

Agreed, 11...Bd7 seems like a weakie of a move. The game you cite was a blitz game.

How about 11...Nxd4 12.Bxd4 e5 13.fxe5 (13.Be3 exf4 14.Bxf4 Be6 is similar, except for Black's isolated d6 pawn. However, practice has shown that's not a fatal weakness for Black.) dxe5 14.Be3 Be6 instead?

There's also plans with b5 and Bb7 to consider for Black as well.

@smyslovfan: i think that after your line with Be3 white can go for a small edge with Nd5 ideas and taking back with pawn and setting the others on b3 and c4 and pressure the queenside.

@aggressive: you realise that Bd7 is a main line plan and being passive isn't necessarily wrong... and i want to discuss other ideas like the ones you didn't propose so go and post somewhere else if you don't like analysis...

SmyslovFan

Oh, if you're looking for a small edge rather than a bust, I agree with you. White does get a small edge against the Scheveningen.

busting means crushed in a game not in the opening here in this post... :p

Ok lets try this again. What is the scope of this thread? The move 8.a3, the classicial schvenigen or the game you gave? Is the sequence 11...Re8 12. Qe1 Nxd4 13. Bxd4 e5 14.fxe5 dxe5 15. Qg3 Bd8 relevent to the discussion? That actually appears to be the mainline. With the line Smyslovfan gave coming in second. You started the thread, its your fault that its not defined and I have no idea what you want to talk about. I understand it involves analyisis that I did not give, but you did give us a large and largely undifined task.

SmyslovFan

Just so it's recorded at least once, the name of the opening is the

Sicilian Scheveningen.

consider 14.Be3 in your lines with the plan i said to smyslov #5 and you should be able to tell that i published my game in order to analyse its opening-middlegame stage... i don't wish to re-write theory but i believe that studying games gives you a greater understanding of the opening than pure theory, and that's why i posted the game
